Prolonged library closure frustrates learners in eMbalenhle

Matric learners say they need access to a library for their studies, and travelling to libraries in the other towns is costly.

eMbalenhle residents are concerned about the continued closure of the community library, saying the delay is disrupting learners’ education.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) announced in February that the library would close for maintenance until April 30.
But nearly eight months after that deadline, the facility remains shut.

Concerned matric learner, Siphiwe Tshabalala, said he is struggling to prepare for his trial exams without access to a study space.

“I saw the notice about the February to April maintenance, but it’s been almost eight months now, and we still can’t access the library. Some of us have to find money for a taxi fare to travel to the Secunda Library.

“Our education depends on research and access to a proper library, but I can’t afford that money. I wonder if the municipality takes our education seriously, or if they don’t care because their children are not attending township schools,” said Tshabalala.

Another matric learner, Vusi Mbele, who studies science and mathematics, said the closure makes it difficult to access the tools he needs.

“Travelling to Evander or Secunda to access a library costs R32 per day. Where are we going to get that money? Because the municipality is the one that closed our library, why don’t they arrange a mobile library for us instead of keeping quiet as if everything is fine?

“After our matric results, all politicians storm our schools as if they care about our education, but now we have a problem and no one cares,” Mbele said.

When the Ridge Times enquired about the closure in June, GMM’s media liaison, Donald Green, confirmed the library was shut for roof repairs funded by the Department of Sports, Culture and Recreation.

While most of the work was complete, he said the lighting installation was outstanding, making the library unsafe for use.

Green admitted that GMM failed to inform residents and schools about the delay, but assured the public that the library would reopen once the lighting issue was resolved.

Recently, following fresh complaints from learners, Green told the Ridge Times the eMbalenhle Public Library remains “temporarily closed until further notice” to allow for essential upgrades and renovations.

“The renovations may cause temporary inconvenience, but they are essential to ensure that the library remains a space of information, social interaction and relaxation.

“We therefore appeal to affected patrons to please bear with us while the renovations are underway. Users and patrons are advised to use neighbouring libraries in the interim,” said Green.
