FF Plus calls for action, demands Lekwa complete work

Clr Dankus Venter said trenches are left open and pavements and roads are never fully repaired.

The Freedom Front Plus in Standerton issued a media release on January 19, calling out the Lekwa Local Municipality for failing to fully repair roads and sidewalks after completing the work.

According to Dankus Venter, Freedom Front Plus councillor, the Lekwa Local Municipality has been digging trenches for water pipes and cables for over a year, leaving the work unfinished.

Venter explained that trenches are left open and pavements and roads are never fully repaired. Furthermore, residents’ driveways are permanently damaged and remain unrepaired despite repeated complaints.

“This seriously endangers residents,” stated Venter.

Venter explained that this not only poses a hazard to pedestrians but also to motorists, as unremoved rubble and soil wash into the stormwater system during rain. This causes the drains to be blocked and streets to flood.

“Many stormwater drain covers are missing or broken, posing a major accident risk,” explained Venter.

Venter stated that sidewalks in the CBD are overrun with weeds, indicating the LLM’s lack of routine maintenance. According to Venter, the municipality is legally obliged to keep roads, pavements, and stormwater systems in good repair.

Venter stated that, under the Municipal Systems Act and the Constitution, service delivery must benefit all residents whilst ensuring their safety.

These open trenches, blocked drains, and blocked systems are dangerous and could lead to legal action if they cause harm to an individual or damage property.

“The municipality must be held liable for negligence,” stated Venter.

The Freedom Front Plus demanded immediate attention to this matter.
Stating that all open trenches and damaged areas be repaired, rubble be removed, and a proper maintenance plan be implemented.

“Residents deserve to live and work in a safe and tidy environment,” Concluded Venter.
