Lekwa official parks municipal vehicle in handicapped bay

Municipal spokesperson says the employee has to answer for parking in the disabled parking while not being disabled.

The Standerton Advertiser spotted a Lekwa Local Municipality (LLM)-branded vehicle parked in the handicapped spot at the Sasol filling station in the Junxion Centre on January 19.

The vehicle was parked there for a lengthy period, with the driver nowhere in sight. Upon returning to the vehicle, the driver did not appear handicapped at all.

We took the issue to Lubabalo Majenge, the LLM spokesperson, who confirmed that the driver was not disabled, was identified as an employee in the electrical department, and that the vehicle belonged to the municipality.

“The employee has to answer for parking in the disabled parking while not being disabled,” stated Majenge.

At the time of going to print, the LLM did not confirm the repercussions this employee faced.

This disregard for the needs of disabled persons in the community reflects a higher disregard for the greater public.

Media showing the able driver can be found on the Standerton Advertiser Facebook page.
