Empty reservoirs exacerbate water challenges in Standerton

DA Clr Deon Bekker said on February 12, five of the seven reservoirs in Standerton are empty.

Standerton’s water woes now include the low levels of reservoirs supplying communities in the town.

DA Clr Deon Bekker said on February 12, five of the seven reservoirs in Standerton are empty, adding that no maintenance by the Lekwa Local Municipality and years of neglecting critical infrastructure had caused this.

The reservoirs have accumulated serious amounts of filth because of inadequate cleaning and maintenance, and need to be cleaned before they can work again.

Bekker said that if all seven reservoirs were fully operational, the water crisis could have been alleviated while refurbishments at the Standerton Water Treatment Plant continued uninterrupted.

He believes the only solution is a complete overhaul of the reservoirs, including cleaning and refurbishing all units. The municipality did not provide a comment at the time of going to print.
