UPDATE: Baboon seen in Standerton, killed
This is not the same baboon that was on the loose in Secunda.
UPDATE [15:30] : It has been confirmed the baboon spotted in Standerton since Saturday morning, has been shot dead on a farm east of Standerton this afternoon.
The baboon that was seen last week in Secunda found his way out of town on Saturday morning (March 7), while another baboon was spotted in the backyard of a house in Standerton on Saturday afternoon.
The large baboon in Standerton was seen on the golf course on March 8, and the latest sighting of him was this morning (March 9) on the roof of a building in Standerton. This is not the same baboon that was on the loose in Secunda.
Animal activists Tanja Ackerman of Secunda Wildlife Rescue and Marius van Reeuwyk, Chief Inspector of the South African Animal Welfare Inspectorate Association (Saawia), hope the Standerton baboon will also find his way out of the urban area.
Two Standerton residents who tried to track the baboon, Leon Enslin of AfriForum and snake catcher Frans Vermaak, said they spent hours on Sunday driving around looking for him.
Kasselman Security Services used their drones and captured footage of the baboon this morning. They tried to keep track of and monitor him, but since this morning nobody knows the animal’s whereabouts.
