WATCH: Social workers in Gert Sibande District picket over working conditions

Nehawu is demanding that the Mpumalanga Department of Social Development MEC, Nompumelelo Hlophe, attend to their grievances.

Social workers from the Gert Sibande District are protesting today under the banner of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu), demanding that the Mpumalanga Department of Social Development MEC, Nompumelelo Hlophe, attend to their grievances.

According to social workers picketing in front of the Social Development offices in eMbalenhle, they had previously sent a letter to the office of the MEC, in which Nehawu raised their concerns, before deciding to protest. The protest action began yesterday.

They claim that no one responded to this letter.

Among their grievances is the demand that the department implement the recommendations of a forensic report.

They also want the department to employ more social workers due to the overwhelming workload currently faced. According to Nehawu, social workers are overworked and suffering from burnout or traumatic stress, yet they are still required to provide services to the community.
