Bethal Stock Theft Unit secures convictions for local farmers

The convictions of four people stem from cases reported in June 2025 and February 2026.

The Stock Theft Unit investigating officers have secured the convictions of four people for stealing and slaughtering livestock belonging to local farmers. The convictions are the result of the dedication and hard work of Detective Sergeant Dumisani Magagula and Detective Mandla Motaung.

The conviction stems from cases reported in June 2025 and February 2026. In June 2025, the accused, Sethu Prince Mpanza, unlawfully and intentionally cut the fence of a kraal at Bankpan farm in Bethal and deprived the lawful owner of 45 cattle.

The farmer informed the unit commander of the incident, who then conducted preliminary investigations at livestock auctions. During these investigations, Mpanza was found in possession of 30 cattle at the Sundra livestock auction; these were later positively identified by the owner.

Mpanza was subsequently arrested for theft of livestock and possession of stolen property. Following his arrest, he made several appearances at the Bethal Magistrate’s Court. Based on witness testimony, he was found guilty and sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment or a fine of R10 000.

He was declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103(2) of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000). In another incident in February, four people were arrested and charged with the theft of 14 sheep from a kraal at Skapkraal farm in Bethal.

It is alleged that a shepherd alerted the owner after spotting sheep in eMzinoni township with the owner’s identification marks. The owner drove to the area and, upon arrival, was assisted by other local farmers in verifying the brand marks.

The complainant identified 11 sheep, which were then returned to him by the police. Following their arrest, the suspects appeared at the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on charges of stock theft.

Based on the evidence provided by the investigating officer and witnesses, the court recently found three of the accused guilty and sentenced them. Mduduzi Madonsela (38) was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment or a R10 000 fine.

Simon Molefe Ramakhele (74) was sentenced to six months imprisonment or a R3 000 fine. Petros Thabang Magangane (33) was also sentenced to six months imprisonment or a R3 000 fine.

All three men were also declared unfit to possess firearms. Sergeant Thomas Mogadime encourages livestock owners to brand their livestock as it is compulsory and to show ownership.

He also encouraged them to:

• Brand all livestock to deter theft and ensure positive identification.

• Maintain a livestock register.

• Report all stock theft incidents immediately to the local SAPS Stock Theft Unit.

• Report stray animals to the police.
