Police catch foreigner for theft of railway cables near Standerton

The 402m of cable were cut from the railway line at Darling Farm in Standerton that is used to carry goods to the harbour.

An illegal immigrant from Lesotho (26) was arrested for tampering with essential infrastructure on January 23.

According to Captain Braam Robberts, communications officer for the Standerton SAPS, the immigrant and three accomplices were caught stealing copper cables from the railway line at Darling Farm in Standerton.

Afri Guard Security caught the suspects red handed and requested backup.

Robberts stated that three suspects evaded arrest, but the Lesotho national was arrested.

According to Robberts, the suspect was in possession of a bolt cutter and power cables.

The suspect informed the police that a VW polo was used to travel to the scene and pointed out where the vehicle was parked.

According to Robberts, the other suspects fled the scene in the vehicle in the direction of Greylingstad.

The vehicle was spotted by Greylingstad SAPS and a chase ensued, resulting in the VW Polo overturning.

Robberts explained that upon arrival, the suspects had fled the scene, but 402m of cables cut from the railway were located.

According to Robberts, this railway line is used to carry goods to the harbour.

“These thefts have a negative impact on the economy due to the delay in delivery time,” said Robberts.

The arrested man will appear in court on January 26, facing charges of tampering with essential infrastructure and illegal entry into South Africa.

According to Robberts, bail will be opposed pending further investigation.
