Police clamp down on illegal liquor outlets in Standerton area
A second illegal liquor outlet was closed after police discovered that a spaza shop was used to trade liquor.
Operation Vala Konke began on January 2, during which various drug-related arrests were made and drugs such as tik, nyaope and dagga confiscated.
According to a statement of the provincial commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, two shebeens were closed down with about 319,38l of liquor confiscated.
Police noticed a group of people at a property while patrolling. Upon investigation, they discovered the alleged owners were running a shebeen.
In searching the place, a large volume of liquor was found. According to police, a man was arrested and a fine was paid as an admission of guilt.

The police also received information about a vehicle driven by a person allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
The arrested driver was from Charl Cilliers, heading to Standerton.
Another man, suspected to have murdered his female companion was also apprehended after police involved in the operation received information on his whereabouts in Standerton.

Altogether four other suspects were arrested on charges of public drinking. They paid fines as an admission of guilt.
Two suspects were arrested on theft charges and a man was nabbed on charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The arrested suspects were scheduled to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, January 3.
Manamela welcomed the successes made by the police during the operation.
