Three cable theft incidents in Standerton
Lekwa previously urged the community to report cable theft at the nearest police station, saying its cost them millions of rands to replace.
Kasselman Security Services (KSS) sent information on March 15 about cable theft at the intersection of Vry Street and Schwickard Street in Standerton.
According to KSS, the Lekwa Municipality was on site to begin repairs.
“We need everyone’s cooperation to protect our town’s infrastructure and to identify and arrest these criminals,” Jannie Kasselman said.
“This is the third cable theft incident today.”
The Standerton Advertiser sent an email to Lekwa’s communication officer, Thando Nkosi, the past week, enquiring about the cost of cable repairs.
Nkosi said it depends on the size and length of the cable, costing anything from R18 000 to R30 000 or more.
She added that there are different types of cables and sizes and cable theft happens to all types and sizes, including household cable which may be slightly cheaper.
The newspaper has been reporting extensively on cable theft and the tripping of power afterwards.
From cables stolen next to the R50 Road towards Early Bird and Astral putting a security guard 24/7 on site. A decision was later taken to place the cables in steel pipes.
These pipes were welded to the structure to make it more difficult for attempts at stealing.
Cable thieves and vandals damage substations as well and the danger of electrocution at open substations existed, when one man was electrocuted at at open substation in Baumann Street in the past and another at an open substation in the industrial area.
