Police arrest a man for illegal liquor trading in Standerton

The suspect could not produce valid documentation to be in South Africa and the police laid a charge for contravention of the Immigration Act against him besides selling liquor without a licence.

A Somali national in his early 20s was arrested during Operation Shanela for allegedly selling liquor inside a spaza shop in Standerton.

According to a recent statement from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, they confiscated about 332.69l of alcohol, valued at about R20 000 on September 30.

During the operation, police noticed suspicious movements and gatherings at the premises, which also traded as a tuck shop.

Police investigated and discovered illegal liquor trading activities.

The investigators are working with the Department of Home Affairs about his status in the country.

The suspect was scheduled to appear at the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on October 2.

During the same operation, they issued three other people with fines for contravention of the Road Traffic Act.

The provincial commissioner of SAPS Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, said they will closely monitor more liquor outlets following the spate of fatal shooting incidents from liquor outlets in the province.
