If you have the TAP and PAY feature on your bank cards when paying, please remove it or change it to always ask for a pin. Rather insert your bank cards into the machine and enter your pin - this is much safer.

Following are some tips to avoid being a victim of criminal activities. Try to avoid drawing money from ATM’s if you do not have to, especially large sums.

You might think that you are not being watched, but you possibly are – you cannot see them, but the criminals are watching you.

To the women of our community: please try going to town without your handbag, as this is a big target and they are extremely skilled at taking things out without you even noticing or feeling it.

If you have to take a handbag, make sure someone is walking on the side where your handbag is and have your handbag over your neck as well. Try not to take your cellphone out in public and do not put it in your back pocket as that is easy for criminals to take it.

Always test the doors of your vehicle after you have locked it to make sure no one jammed the signal when you were locking your vehicle – this criminal act has been an ongoing concern in and around Delmas.

Make sure nothing is visible inside your vehicle for everyone to see and when leaving the house, make sure you leave valuable items at home.

Keep doors and windows locked while driving. Do not let your children out of your sight for a second when in town, hold their hands permanently.

Do not let strangers distract you. Go to town, get what you need and return to the safety of your own home as soon as possible.

Avoid driving after dark at all costs as hijackings and foreign objects (spiking) on the road surface appear to happen more often after hours.

If you are travelling long distance, take regular breaks to stretch your legs and to keep yourself alert on the road.
Make sure to have snacks and water in the vehicle, for in case of an emergency.

Do not speed to get to where you are going, rather leave earlier so that you can drive at a safe pace – remember you all have families that care and want you to come back safely.

Wherever you find yourself, be vigilant at all times.
