Grootdraai Dam level rises: Lekwa warns residents

The current plan to deal with the huge volume of water flowing into the dam is to increase one of the gates to 3m at 19:00 and another at 20:00.

Residents and businesses in the areas below the floodline in Standerton, have been advised to evacuate immediately.

Water levels of the Grootdraai Dam have risen above 116%, due to mass volumes of water from heavy rainfall.

Initially, two sluice gates have been opened at 2m and 1m respectively.

These gates were later adjusted to 2m each to alleviate pressure on the dam wall.

The current plan to deal with the huge volume of water flowing into the dam is to increase one of the gates to 3m at 19:00 and another at 20:00.

No further adjustments will be made until tomorrow morning.

A statement released by the Lekwa Local Municipality warns residents to keep away from low lying areas that might be affected by the mass of water flooding down the Vaalriver.

The Vaal River in Standerton is flooding its banks.

Evacuation warnings have also been issued.

Should anyone require help during this time, the Standerton Town Hall, the Sakhile Extention 4 Hall and Sakhile Extention 6 Hall have been made available to help during this time.

 

The public are asked to remain in safe areas and to stay away from activities that could cause harm to yourself or others during this period.
