Govan Mbeki Municipality redirects R5m to fast-track water projects

The mayor said the the money will be used to accelerate the completion of the Leandra water reservoir and the eMbalenhle bulk water pipeline.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality has approved the redirection of R5m from the R10m originally allocated for the Leandra Stadium upgrade to support critical water infrastructure projects in Leandra and eMbalenhle.

According to Executive Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma, the money will be used to accelerate the completion of the Leandra water reservoir and the eMbalenhle bulk water pipeline.

Both projects, which began over the past two years, are now nearing completion.

Zuma indicated that the municipality anticipates both projects will be completed by the end of June, highlighting the need to ensure sufficient funding is available to finish the work.

“Both the Leandra reservoir and the eMbalenhle bulk water pipeline are close to completion due to effective implementation by the appointed agents.

“It is therefore important that we allocate adequate funding to ensure these projects are completed on time,” said Zuma.

He further explained that the stadium upgrade project is expected to extend into the next financial year, making it feasible to temporarily reallocate part of its budget.

“There is no need for us to keep funds idle when they can be used to complete essential water projects. We are requesting council to approve the transfer of R5m from the stadium budget, with the understanding that this amount will be reinstated in the next financial year to allow the stadium upgrade to continue,” he added.

Zuma also noted that the Leandra reservoir project is not funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), but rather through the municipality’s internal funding.
