Offenders show their athletic skills

Local offenders excel at championship in Rustenburg.

BETHAL – Offenders of Bethal Correctional Services, took part in an athletics championship in Rustenburg on 20 and 21 February.

Altogether 5 000 offendes took part in this championship and it is said that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, however the devil could find no workshop in the minds of these offenders.

These offenders began theier road to this championship with a regional championship followed by the regional winners representing their regions at the National Offenders Athletics Championships.

The Chief Deputy Commissioner, Mr James Smalberger, told the offenders that they were all winners because of their commitment to take part in the championships and they should mobilise their fellow offenders to take part as well as sport is part of rehabilitation programs.

True to Mr Smalberger’s words all offenders returned home with more to celebrate.

Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the North West regions were the winners of the gold trophy in the juveniles category and each participant in the 4×4 relay got a gold medal.

All four athletes in the 4×4 relay are from Bethal.

The acting Area Commissioner for Bethal, Mr DA Nzimande praised the offenders for their participation and the spirit of sportsmanship shown during the two-day tournament and correctional officials were commended for their good work.
