Standerton Cricket team advances

Standerton Cricket Club has advanced to the Mpumalanga Platinum Premier League play-offs.

After a hard-fought round robin stage Standerton ended in fourth place and will compete against the top teams of the other three regions in Mpumalanga to determine the overall winner.

Standerton has been included in a group of five teams that will compete on a home-and-away basis.

The teams are Bethal, Standerton, Witrivier, Witbank and Mozambique.

The top two teams will then advance to play the top two teams of the other groups until two teams remain that will compete in the final.

“It was quite a surprise to end in fourth place after a slow start to the season,” Mr Theunis Barnard, president of the club, said.

The first match for Standerton is against Witbank at the Standerton Cricket Oval on 17 January at 10am.

Players have begun dusting off cricket kits and trying to shed some pounds gained over the festive season.

“We did not think we would be in action so soon and thought we were going to complete the Pro 20 league first, nevertheless the players are positive and will take it in their stride,” a player said.

Residents are urged to attend the match and support the club.

The club has been hard at work preparing the pitch for Saturday’s match.
