Mathew Khumalo produces stars on tennis court
“I began coaching tennis at the George Lee Club in Sandton, Johannesburg,”
Mathew Khumalo’s love for sport and passion for kids have seen great local tennis players such as Divyesh Daya and Frederick Nel, just to name a few, emerging.
His love for tennis began at an early age while he was at primary school in Zimbabwe, even though he only began playing it in Grade 5 because he played soccer and cricket before.
“I have competed in a number of tournaments under the Coca-Cola Tennis Development that includes the International Tennis Federation Pro-circuit.
This opportunity saw him rub shoulders with the likes of Wayne Black, a professional tennis player from Zimbabwe and taking lessons from Wayne’s brother, Byron Black, who was also a professional tennis player.
However, Mr Khumalo left Zimbabwe and moved to South Africa and worked for a law firm based in Johannesburg in 1998, doing office work.
After two years of working for the company, he moved to another company and worked in procurement.
He decided to take up tennis coaching in 2011 and did an instructor level 1 play and stay course with the International Tennis Federation Board and acquired a certificate after successfully completing the course.
