Olympic athlete supports parkrun
Laura Muir, Olympic athlete from Great Britain, set off the runners at the parkrun this past Saturday.
SECUNDA – Ms Siphokazi Kilonda completed her 50th parkrun on Saturday, 3 December.
This parkrun was a memorable one, as Laura Muir, an Olympic 1 500m athlete from Great Britain, was there to set the runners off.
Though Muir did not run in Saturday’s parkrun, her coach, Mr Andy Young, did.
Muir was there to support him and speak to and motivate local participants.
A record number of parkrun volunteers were present.
The parkrun is a free community initiative that is part of an international organisation, and once you have registered as a runner and received your bar code, you will always be welcome to run at any parkrun.
Mr Johann Reyneke, run director of the Secunda parkrun, explained: “In a parkrun, the first person to finish is just as important as the last person to finish, that is why we have no capital letters in the word parkrun.
“Everyone is equal. It is you against the clock and it is about being active and living a healthy lifestyle without having to be a professional athlete.”
Muir was excited about the large number of participants at Saturday’s parkrun and liked the idea of people coming out to exercise as a community.
“This is great and I think everyone has a lot of fun and the weather is perfect.”
