Mefy fell in love with Funakoshi

“When you fight a person, you should look directly into their eyes to see their next movement.”

eMBALENHLE – Mefy Modise’s (16) love for sport helped him to finally find his favourite sport, namely Funakoshi.

Before he began practicing karate, Mefy loved playing soccer and rugby.

He said he used to be short tempered and loved fighting, but since he has taken up his new sport, he has been able to control his temper.

When sharing his karate skills, Mefy said a disciplined mind, self control, peace, commitment and self-confidence contributed towards his success in all areas of his life, including his school studies.

He also learned from Funakoshi never to give up, but to always finish the fight.

“When you fight a person, you should look directly into their eyes to see their next movement,” said Mefy.

He aims to become a champion like his coach, Sensei Joseph, from eMbalenhle Funakoshi.

“My son loves karate and he even influenced his younger brother who is now in Grade 1, to practice karete,” said Ms Phindile Modise, Mefy’s mother.

“They take their practicing serious, but I am afraid their little sister might now also join them.”

She added what makes her support them, is that Mefy does his homework and house chores daily before he goes to practice.

“The sport taught him discipline and you will never find him roaming the streets,” said Ms Modise.

Mefy qualified for a blue belt.
