Bethal court sentences murder accused to 15 years imprisonment
Police secured two successful sentences.
The Bethal Regional Court sentenced Sbusiso Thela (37) to 15 years’ imprisonment for murder on April 15.
The sentence follows a conviction handed down on March 13 for a murder in December 2023.
According to reports, the incident took place at the Giant Bottle Store, located behind the eMzinoni Police Station.
The accused stabbed the victim, who then ran towards the eMzinoni Police Station, where he collapsed and died at the entrance of the police station.
Police officers on duty responded swiftly to the scene and arrested the accused. Through the combined efforts of the investigating officer, police members, and witnesses who testified in court, the accused was successfully convicted.

In addition to the 15-year prison sentence, the court declared Thela unfit to possess a firearm.
Khayalami Mahlangu (25) was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for robbery. According to Sergeant Cynthia Mtsweni, eMzinoni Police spokesperson, the incident occurred in January last year, when Mahlangu robbed a 52-year-old man who was on his way to work.
Mahlangu forcefully took a bag belonging to the complainant, which contained a hearing device worth R150 000.
Mtsweni said following the incident, the investigation was initiated with the help of witnesses, resulting in the accused being apprehended later that day.
The stolen items were subsequently recovered at an abandoned house in Milan Park. In addition to the prison sentence, Mahlangu was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
