Former Home Affairs officials in Secunda appear in court over ID fraud
Portia Mtshweni (41) and Nondumiso Maboyi (40), face charges of identity theft, fraud, and the unlawful processing of official documents.
Two former Department of Home Affairs employees based in Secunda appeared before the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on June 22 for a bail application on charges related to identity document fraud.
The accused, Portia Mtshweni (41) and Nondumiso Maboyi (40), face charges of identity theft, fraud, and the unlawful processing of official documents.
Mtshweni was arrested on April 30, while Maboyi later handed herself over to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in Secunda.
According to allegations, the pair assisted in the fraudulent issuance of South African identity documents and birth certificates to foreign nationals.
Investigators allege that South African identity documents were unlawfully issued to four Zimbabwean nationals and one Mozambican national.
In addition, a Zimbabwean child allegedly received a fraudulent South African birth certificate, while the child’s mother reportedly obtained a South African identity document through fraudulent means.
The two accused were previously granted bail of R3 000 each in May.
However, they were subsequently re-arrested in connection with another case involving alleged fraud and corruption related to the processing of identity documents.
Their latest bail application was postponed to June 30 to allow another magistrate to preside over the matter.
The investigation by the Hawks continues.
