Celebrate Mandela Day with Roodepoort parkrun – here's how you can help
Roodepoort parkrun invites runners to celebrate Mandela Day with them on July 18.
Roodepoort parkrun has announced that it will host a special parkrun event this Saturday to celebrate Mandela Day.
International Mandela Day is celebrated every year on the birthday of former president Nelson Mandela (July 18) to honour his legacy of community service and Ubuntu.
According to run director Debbie Pieterse, the committee of Roodepoort parkrun decided that they wanted to dedicate this Saturday’s run to the memory of Nelson Mandela.
“The need within our communities is so great,” she says. “But if we each do what we can to help, we can make a huge difference.”
Pieterse requests that participants donate anything from non-perishable or dry food items, winter blankets or even dog and cat food, and anything in between.
“We will be giving to less-fortunate people within the community, and any animal products will be donated to the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA.”
To add to the spirit of the event, participants are encouraged to wear funny socks, tutus, angel wings, or colourful wigs.
“We want runners to express the pure joy of giving through their outfits on the day.”
She adds that in true South African spirit, there will be a ‘bring and share’ event, which will kick off directly after the parkrun, where participants can bring their own snacks and drinks to enjoy and share with fellow runners.
