Lunch and blankets given to the needy

Cold and hungry Zandspruit residents get a warm meal.

Charity and community organisation 1-in-1-out held an outreach project in Zandspruit on 29 June. They provided the children of the Happy Kidz preschool with lunch and also handed out blankets to both children and their parents.

All participated in a praise and worship session on the school grounds, followed by a bible and prayer meeting. The Rhema Church’s charity group Rhema Hands of Compassion donated the blankets which totalled 200.

Afterwards the kids and parents were treated to a hearty soup and bread, sponsored by Woolworths and Famous Brands.

The school is in its 11th year and the three-room building provides a school for 91 children, teacher Queen Mahlangu said. “Some parents really struggle financially, but we often receive donations.”

According to Stephan Thomas from 1-in-1-out the organisation would like to renovate a dilapidated building which could then be used as new premises for the school.

“It is winter and it is cold but with this building revamped it would give the children a lovely and warm area where they can go to school,”

Thomas said. “The idea is to build and convert the feeding area into three classrooms, of which each classroom will be 5m x 10m and 6m high. Every classroom will have two windows and one door, with a 15m x 20m concrete floor.”

Needs for this project include combi doors, eight steel windows for the classrooms, three steel windows for the bathroom, three basins, pedestals and taps, 15m¬3 concrete mix, and 75 cement bags. The organisation also aims to revamp three toilets and plumbing and furnish the kitchen with a gas stove, sink, fridge/freezer, shelves and cupboards. Fencing of 40m x 20m and paving of 10m x 15m will also be necessary.
