Roodepoort community rallies behind muscular dystrophy awareness
Hope in Motion brought residents, runners, cyclists and volunteers together at Hoërskool Florida to support local families affected by muscular dystrophy.
Residents came together at Hoërskool Florida for Hope in Motion 2026, hosted by Muscular Dystrophy Foundation South Africa (MDFSA) Gauteng branch on September 19.
According to Robert Scott, the general manager of MDFSA Gauteng, the annual initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for people living with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions.
“The event created an opportunity for community members to support affected individuals and families while learning more about the challenges associated with the condition,” said Scott.
Runners, cyclists, vendors, volunteers and supporters joined the initiative, demonstrating how community participation can contribute to a cause that affects individuals and families beyond the diagnosis itself.
“The initiative promotes a message of hope, inclusion and solidarity, highlighting the importance of ensuring that people living with muscular dystrophy are recognised as valued members of society,” he added.
Through its Muscle Runners, Muscle Riders and Little Heroes of Hope initiatives, the foundation encourages participants to turn their interest in running and cycling into an opportunity to make a difference.
For families affected by muscular dystrophy, access to support services and a community that understands their experiences can make an important difference. The funds raised through Hope in Motion help the foundation continue providing social work assistance, support groups and other services to individuals and their families.
The event also serves as a platform for residents, businesses and other organisations to get involved in supporting people who may face ongoing challenges associated with neuromuscular conditions.
By bringing people together at a local school, the initiative highlights how community spaces can help unite residents behind a shared purpose.
Hope in Motion encourages residents to look beyond awareness alone and consider how they can contribute through donations, volunteering, participation and support for affected families.
The initiative ultimately seeks to build a more inclusive community where people living with muscular dystrophy and their families feel supported, understood and connected.
