Assaulted, called ‘kaff*r’ for snarky remark

A situation got out of control at a Roodepoort filling station last weekend.

Helderkruin resident Lerato Nakedi, 25, and her younger brother and male cousin were assaulted and called ‘kaff*rs’ after her brother made a snarky remark.

The incident allegedly took place outside a filling station on Ouklip Road on 28 February at around 7.30pm. The trio parked Lerato’s vehicle on a disabled parking space to run into the shop quickly, which she admits was an err on her part. A Silver Polo, of which the registration number is known to the Record, was parked next to hers, with three white male occupants. One motioned for her to roll her window down and proceeded to ask her whether she’s disabled, as she’s parked in a bay reserved for the disabled. She further alleges he insulted her and repeated the question, no matter her answer.

“My brother, getting tired of the whole ordeal, from the passenger seat next to me then told the man, ‘yes’, hoping he’d leave us alone,” Lerato told the Record.

“The next moment, the driver of the Polo exited his vehicle, walked over to my brother and slapped him.”

She tried to intervene and prohibit a fight but was then allegedly also attacked, all three the occupants of the other vehicle getting involved.

“Bystanders tried to help us, but they were also attacked and we were all called ‘kaff*rs’,” Lerato said.

The three men allegedly continued assaulting the trio, after which they sped off in the Polo. Bystanders helped the family contact the Roodepoort Police, who arrived to take statements. Honeydew Cluster spokesperson Karen Jacobs confirmed a case of assault was subsequently opened. The investigation is in its initial stages and being handled by Roodepoort detectives, she said.
