A tip-off from the community has finally led to the arrest and successful conviction of a murderer.
According to Roodepoort police spokesperson, Nonhlanhla Khumalo, the police received a complaint about a murder in Dunusa at Matholesville after 10pm on 9 October last year.
“Community members led police to the crime scene. The ambulance was called and the victim, known only as Tshidiso from Lesotho, was certified dead,” said Khumalo.
After working hard on the case, the police located Thabo Morebuli, who became a key witness in the case. Morebuli told police he was with his friends at Moketa’s Tavern, where the patrons were seated in different social groups. The owner of the tavern approached the victim and an argument broke out over some gold dust. The tavern owner then shot the victim seven times in the upper body.
The suspect was arrested quickly and detained at the Roodepoort Police Station. Investigations continued until the case was finally heard at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on 21 June. Phiri Segoete Mokepa (aged 32) was found guilty of murder, and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.
“The police appreciate the major role played by the key witness in this case. Warrant Officer Thulo was applauded by management for his commitment to this case,” said Khumalo.
