The Gauteng Department of Education remains mum as to what the plans are for its infamous vacant property in Allen’s Nek.

The property on the corner of Gewelhuis Avenue and Kanniedood Street is said to be attracting vagrants to the suburb due to its lack of supervision.

Since accessing the property is as easy as taking candy from a baby because of the damaged security fence, the residents fear that it has become a breeding ground for criminal activity. Their biggest concern is the safety of learners walking past the property to and from their schools.

A worried resident, Jannie Strydom, who attempted to secure the property with a lock and chain he had paid for out of his own pocket, told Northsider that he had been warned by the trespassers (vagrants) to mind his own business, “… because the property does not belong to me,” he lamented.

Almost a month ago, the GDE spokesperson, Steve Mabona, was approached repeatedly for comment on the matter; however, to date, he has failed to respond.
