Welties Primary principal tests positive for Covid-19

The school released a statement on Facebook, informing the parents that the principal, Mr James van Dyk, tested positive for coronavirus.

Weltevreden Park Primary School is operating without a headmaster until further notice.

The school released a statement on Facebook, informing the parents that the principal, Mr James van Dyk, tested positive for coronavirus.

The statement, approved by the School Governing Body (SGB) chairperson, Patrice Dowie, indicated that Mr Van Dyk last attended school on Monday, 15 June after a family member of his tested positive to the virus. He, however, displayed no symptoms while at the school.

“He has, on the doctor’s instruction, self-isolated from 15 June and has not been at school or in contact with anyone from the school since then,”  Dowie confirmed. According to Dowie, Mr Van Dyk started displaying symptoms of Covid-19 on Thursday, 25 June, and was tested on Friday, 26 June.

” He received the results of the test late Sunday evening 28 June,” he said, adding that they would like to wish the headmaster a speedy recovery as their thoughts and prayers are with him during this challenging time. Dowie said they’ve been in touch with the Departments of Education and of Health, and were given the go-ahead not to close the school, given the time frame and the sanitization protocols the school has in place.

The Northsider has approached the Department of Education regarding its interventions. In line with the Covid-19 protocol and safety of everyone at the school, Dowie reminded the parents that staff and learners are sanitized on entering their classrooms, they wear masks at all times and that the classroom doors and windows are kept open throughout the day. He also reminded the parents that the classrooms are disinfected every day, and they have a Covid Squad that ensures that all protocols are being followed during the cleaning process. Most importantly, Dowie reminded the parents to inform the school should a learner or his or her family member test positive for Covid-19.

“If a family member shows symptoms of Covid-19, or has gone for a test, all members of that household should go into isolation for a period of 14 days, and the school should be informed. Also, should a learner present with symptoms or have a positive test result, the school needs to be informed. Our contact person is Mr Dale Elias at email excurr@welties.org.za,” he advised.
