Suspect driving stolen vehicle arrested

The driver started driving faster when he noticed the BCI Security officer turning around, and at the Hendrik Potgieter Road intersection he turned left, against a red traffic light.

Most people in our communities associate policing with fighting crime. Stories about policing and crime have always been the popular choice in the news media as well as with novelists.

On Tuesday, 26 January a courier robbery was reported close to Silverstar Casino. One of the BCI Ops managers went the extra mile and started checking the area to see if he could spot the vehicle suspected of being used in the robbery.

While driving on Handicap Road in Ruimsig, he noticed a suspicious Audi Q7 without a front number plate and decided to follow the vehicle.

The driver started driving faster when he noticed the BCI Security officer turning around, and at the Hendrik Potgieter Road intersection he turned left, against a red traffic light.

Backup was requested and informed about what had happened, while the suspect proceeded into Peter Road and turned left into Beyers Naudé Drive.

The security officer managed to get a registration number on the Audi. When it was entered into the system, the feedback was that the number plate belonged to a different vehicle.

The suspect was followed along Peter Road while travelling at a very high speed, even though there were many other vehicles on the road.

When the suspect entered a private residence on Indaba Road, security WhatsApp groups and the Honeydew Police were contacted to assist at the property.

Members from Honeydew Police and Gauteng Flying Squad arrived at the premises so that the Audi could be checked thoroughly.

It was established that the VIN number had been tampered with, and the driver failed to provide an acceptable explanation.

Honeydew Police arrested the suspect and impounded the vehicle. The matter will be investigated further by detectives from Honeydew Police Station.
