This past weekend a courier vehicle driver narrowly escaped being a victim of yet another string of courier robbery crimes.
Coming to its rescue was EC Security reaction manager Norman Mphilo who acted with diligence to distract the wannabe robbers and subsequently apprehended one of them.
Mphilo told Northsider that on Saturday at about 9am he was driving on Beyers Naudé Drive from Honeydew towards Cresta Mall when he encountered a suspicious red Kia Rio.
“When I was waiting for the traffic light to go green at the corner Wilson Street and Beyers Naude Drive, I saw a courier van driving over the pavement and turning right into oncoming traffic towards Fairlands. After this I saw the red Kia Rio skipping a red traffic light and following the courier van,” he recalled.
From this point, Mphilo, a long-time crime fighter knew that something insidious was about to go down.
“When I noticed something wasn’t right about this move, I followed both vehicles driving on Smith Street towards Fairland Police Station. When the red Kia driver noticed that I was driving behind it, they made a U-turn at 7th Street, but I decided to follow them at high speed as the vehicle was driving too fast,” he explained.
According to Mphilo, during the chase the suspects failed to negotiate a traffic circle which caused them to lose control of their vehicle and crash into the wall of a complex.
“While other suspects jumped out of the vehicle and started running towards Beyers Naudé Drive, I managed to apprehend one. Fairlands Police came on the scene and confirmed that the red Kia and the suspect were linked to courier robberies,” he concluded.
