Chasing criminals and the unmasked

Stopping criminals in their tracks isn’t the only task at hand for Honeydew Police members.

The men and women in blue form part of the frontline workers in the country, with a critical mandate from Government to ensure that they supervise our neighbourhoods to ensure full compliance with the Covid-19 regulations.

The spokesperson for the station, Captain Balan Muthan, who wasn’t impressed with the public’s adherence to the imposed regulations said, “Regarding crime, we are still stable. But the biggest challenge is members of the public who aren’t adhering to the Covid-19 regulations.”

In light of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address recently in which he emphasised the importance of wearing a mask and deeming it as an offence should officials find an individual without one, Muthan told Northsider that community members still walk around maskless.

“When we come across individuals without a mask, we ask them to wear it, and if they do not have one, we then follow the orders of the President and of Minister of Police, Bheki Cele and arrest them,” he explained.

He emphasised that they were not being harsh when advising someone to wearing a mask. “We ask you politely and say ‘Madam or Sir may you please wear your mask’. People should treat wearing a mask in public as if they are walking into a shopping centre where security will prevent them from entering the premises without one,” he advised.
