In the dim light of the illegal mining underworld, chaos and confusion thrive in the shadows.
Details have surfaced regarding the cause of death of the man whose body was found on the now deserted section of Nick Toomey Boulevard on 29 January. Initial claims by local residents suggested that the man was an illegal miner who had been trapped underground after excavators were used to seal off an illegal mine shaft. This claim seems contrary to preliminary investigations by Roodepoort Police, which revealed that the 24-year-old man was in fact poisoned.

“We still have to wait for the full toxicology report before we can be certain which poison caused his death, but the post mortem revealed that he was indeed poisoned,” confirmed Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Captain Juanita Yorke. Details of the investigation so far also suggest that the deceased man was not an illegal miner but a foreign national living in nearby Matholesville.

Police are treating the case as one of either malicious intent, or even suicide, with information suggesting that the man was caught up in a plot to discredit local business owners over the lack of job opportunities for the local community.

Roodepoort Police are urging anyone who had any contact with the man or has any information on his death to please contact them as soon as possible.
