Johannesburg Water has initiated two emergency water pipe replacement projects in Weltevreden Park and Constantia Kloof respectively.

Construction on the emergency water pipe replacement on David Street in Constantia Kloof began on Tuesday 25 May. Due to continuous water challenges, including leaks, the work will include replacing and rerouting existing water pipes on David Street to prevent the flooding of residential properties. Approximately 1,3km of 110mm mPVC pipes will be installed by means of the open-trench method.

The work, which is expected to take five months, will comprise the following:

• Replacing old valves and fire hydrants

• Transferring house connections from the old to the new water pipeline

• Locating and protecting existing services in the area

• Removing and reinstating surfaces such lawn, paving etc.

Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester said several pockets of the ward have been plagued by water outages. “Many of these outages came about as a result of the infrastructure being vandalised, such as the copper pressure-release valves being stolen.”
