Flashing lights prohibiting truck drivers from turning into William Nicol Road from Ontdekkers Road were recently installed on Ontdekkers Road. For years residents have raised their concerns about the dangers truck drivers pose when they turned into the road that immediately runs down a steep hill, and they usually would not stop in time, if at all.
The lights warn drivers of heavy trucks that are five tonnes or more not to turn into William Nicol Road but instead proceed along Ontdekkers Road. Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester and Ward 70 councillor, Caleb Finn, said Life Flora Hospital, which is down William Nicol Road in Constantia Kloof, offered to fund the lights. “JRA eventually funded them and assisted with the installation, and what is really great is the solar panels that have been put on top,” Bester said. Both agreed that solar power was a more reliable option to ensure the lights remain on.

Finn said numerous accidents had been caused by truck drivers losing control down the hill and crashing through the fence next to the Life Flora Hospital. Residents in the area have been complaining about the danger the trucks pose on that road for years, and this latest infrastructure should bring some relief.
