After a two-year court battle, the accused in the malicious damage to City-owned property case was found guilty in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on September 28. During the previous court appearance, the accused admitted guilt.
The owner of an outdoor advertising company was found guilty of contravening the City’s Public Roads and Outdoor Advertising by-laws. He received a suspended sentence along with a R60 000 fine.
During the last court appearance on September 14 and 15, the business owner admitted guilt on the charges, which the state subsequently dropped against his employees and fellow accused. The fifth accused fled the country in April and a warrant of arrest was issued.
The five were arrested in October 2019 while affixing heavy steel structures to the Golf Club Terrace Bridge in Constantia Kloof.
