Scores arrested over the weekend

Ninety people were arrested during weekend operations conducted by the police

During operations from October 1 to October 3 that addressed minor and violent crimes the police in the West Rand District arrested 90 people.

Muldersdrift communications officer, Sergeant Mulalo Ndou said suspects were arrested for serious crimes including murder, domestic violence, possession of copper cable, possession of drugs and an unlicensed firearm.

“We continue with our mandate as the police to prevent, combat and investigate crime and secure the inhabitants of the District. Other arrests included for crimes such as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, shoplifting, dealing in liquor, and drinking and being disorderly.”

He said motorists are still cautioned against driving under the influence of alcohol. “Drivers are urged not to consume alcohol and drive as they can cause serious injuries to themselves and other road users. This is a serious crime and is punishable by law.”

Acting District Police commissioner, Brigadier Marinda Theron welcomed the arrests and condemned cases of gender-based violence in the community. “I’d like to thank members of the police and other law-enforcement agencies for ensuring that those who are in conflict with the law were brought to book. We also urge community members to report criminal activity to the police immediately,” she said.

Those who were arrested during the weekend are expected to appear in different magistrates’ courts in the District.
