On Friday, October 1 the new City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Mpho Moerane confirmed his 10-Member Mayoral Committee (MMCs) shortly after he was sworn in.
Milly Matlou from Mayoral Communications said in a statement that the choice of MMCs is in support of the theme of continuity in the implementation of the Government of Local Unity’s (GLU) priorities. These are aligned to the Joburg Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) 2040.
“Our task for the next 30 days is to ensure that there are more progress and continuation of the service delivery initiatives that are currently underway,” said Mayor Moerane.
He pointed out that only the Infrastructure and Environmental Services Department has been assigned a new MMC – Councillor Tanya Oldjohn, who is currently the Chairperson of the Section 79 Committee on Infrastructure and Environmental Services.
Mayor Moerane described the appointment of Councillor Oldjohn as a significant milestone in advancing the representation of minorities in the Executive of the City, adding that she brings a lot of experience that will add value to the assigned portfolio.
In the interest of cementing continuity of accelerated service delivery in the City, Mayor Moerane said nine of the MMCs will be returning to the Committee in their respective portfolios.
According to the statement, Councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe is returning to Finance, Councillor Thomas Mofokeng to Economic Development, Councillor Mlungisi Mabaso to Housing, and Councillor Helen Makhuba to Transport.
Councillor Eunice Mgcina returns to Health and Social Development, Councillor Mally Mokoena to Public Safety, Councillor Loyiso Masuku to Group Corporate Shared Services, and Councillor Thapelo Amad is back at Development Planning.
“It is now upon myself and the newly sworn-in MMCs to pick up our Mayors’ fallen spears and tackle the service delivery challenges that remain in the next 30 days of the current term of office,” Mayor Moerane added.
“The newly sworn in leadership is ready to continue serving the people of Johannesburg – even if it is just for 30 days. To demonstrate this in line with being a responsive, effective and accountable leadership, we were out in the city centre on a cleaning campaign in response to a call from local residents about areas in need of urgent attention,” he concluded.
On behalf of the Management and Board of City Power, Advocate Lindiwe Maseko, Chairperson of the Board City Power Johannesburg would like to congratulate Councillor Moerane on his election as Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
“It is a joyful occasion tempered only by the sombre loss of the former Executive Mayors, Councillor Geoff Makhubo and Councillor Jolidee Matongo. We wish to echo Councillor Moerane’s sentiments in accepting his new responsibility in honour of the fallen mayors, and commit ourselves to serving the administration of the new Executive Mayor with renewed dedication,” she concluded.
“The election of Councillor Moerane and his new leadership ensures that there will be continuity of governance and service delivery. We can say this with confidence because City Power has had the privilege of working closely with him in his capacity as the MMC for Infrastructure and Environmental Services.”
