Nombulelo ‘Nosi’ Modutwane, ActionSA candidate for Ward 71, explains her reasons for wanting to fill the ward councillor seat.
Q. What would you do differently to the current ward councillor?
A. As a ward councillor, I believe in working with people and I honestly believe in the slogan ‘together we can achieve more’ and better our own living conditions. I am strongly for the idea of getting everyone involved, especially key people who will contribute to changing our communities for the better without having to always wait for the government but taking initiative as a ward.
Q. How have you been involved in the community?
I have been involved with community work all my life, and have always strived to change people’s lives for the better. I contributed immensely to extending a helping hand. I started providing cooked, balanced meals for the destitute, collecting clothes sponsored and giving it to the needy, where possible even helping those that don’t have the means to apply for social grants and ID documentation, even going as far as sourcing food parcels for the vulnerable; just to name but a few.
Q. What past experiences make you uniquely qualified for this role?
A. I have never been directly involved in municipality work; however, I have always been eager to help others. I believe the passion I have is what drives me to want to always go an extra mile for the betterment of our people or making sure not to turn a blind eye when others are going to bed hungry. I made it my point to get more involved hence the role I am choosing and willing to take further, that of being the servant of the people.
Q. What is your vision for your ward?
Inequality and living conditions remain a challenge in our societies, especially in the era of the high unemployment rate. This forces the majority of our people to go to bed hungry, or living on under a rand a day. My vision is to get young and old members of our communities to create their own source of income through community projects that will help everyone to fend for themselves, and contribute to the economy.
Q. How do you feel this vision can be achieved?
A. Together we can achieve more. If we as communities hold each other’s hands and do more for ourselves, starting small by making our schools conducive and environmentally healthy for our children within the communities, cleaning our own area and encouraging a good dwelling environment. Only if we start with our own selves, will we achieve good governance, but it must start with us cleaning our territory before we want anyone to come and do it for us.
Q. How does your party mirror your personal beliefs?
A. The party carries the correct mandate and mirrors my beliefs, hence I got involved and highly active within the party. Education which is very close to my heart takes preference in the party’s values and also the upholding of ethical leadership, which my party prides its self on. This echoes my beliefs of an efficient public service that serves the interest of the people, which is exactly the principle I go by and support fully.
Q. In 50 words or less, tell the residents of your ward why they should vote for you.
My capabilities of working with people and my extended understanding of socioeconomic challenges make it even easier to understand the dynamics facing our diverse communities and making me want to be part of the solution. Not only I alone, but together with the members of the affected communities. I strongly believe in education, for a day without learning is a day wasted. I would see to it that I serve them well by ensuring that schools are becoming a conducive place of learning that is both safe and accommodating to members of the communities.
