Housing MMC visits mega substation in Fleurhof

The mega substation will benefit residents from the middle of next year since 70% of the work is already completed.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Housing in the City of Joburg, Councillor Mlungisi Mabaso recently visited the Fleurhof mega substation to monitor progress.

According to a statement issued by the City of Johannesburg, the mega substation, being the first of its kind in Africa, was scheduled for completion this October. However, it has been delayed due to Covid-19. It is now expected to be completed by June next year.

However, there are interim measures to power up the completed units to supply power to houses to be alllocated in the near future.

The mega substation will benefit residents from the middle of next year since 70% of the work is already completed. It has the capacity to supply electricity to the whole of Fleurhof, and a further 20 000 units still to be built in the area.

“I am encouraged by the work already completed. It will benefit people who will be allocated houses in Fleurhof,” Councillor Mabaso said.

The structure of this substation – a first for the continent – will drastically reduce cable theft which is rife in South Africa since the bulk of the extensive electrical equipment is housed in secure containers. These structures are common in largely developed countries.
