Meet independent candidate for Ward 89, Vusi Nontyi

Ward 89 comprises of Weltevreden Park, Constantia Kloof and parts of Allen's Nek and Fairland

Vusi Nontyi has been a Weltevreden Park resident for nine years and will be running as an independent candidate for Ward 89. He speaks about the unique circumstances of running without the backing of a large brand and party influence.

Q. Why did you chose to run for ward councillor?
A. Being a resident of this ward, I have similar needs, concerns and similar expectations like any resident of this ward. My observation is that there is a gap which needs to be filled and I ask who should take that responsibility. I thought about it, conducted research on a number of issues and I was compelled to become a public representative. We need to rate the role of the current ward councillor in relation to whether the community at large is involved and informed of the state of affairs, such as budget processes regarding the allocation of maintenance. Is there consistency in communication with the community? I say, no.

Q. Why run as an independent? Why not join a party with an established brand?
A. Political parties are no longer serving the interest of our community, so as an independent I am answerable to the community, not a political party. I believe strongly in the ability of my community to govern itself without having to be led by political parties, and bring quality services and speedy maintenance.

Q. What is your vision for the ward?
Erecting security cameras at crime hotspot areas, creating effective digital crime reporting platforms and establishing an effective basic service delivery reporting platform.

Q. What would the voters gain by having an independent councillor?
– You get your power back by voting for someone who is not influenced by any political party
– Vote for an independent candidate answerable to his community
– Vote for a person who has long experience in local government
– Vote for an incorruptible public representative/ community leader
– Quality services and speedy maintenance works
– Healthy and clean environment. Safe and orderly Ward 89

Q. What are the biggest challenges running as an independent?
A. Challenges I am experiencing is the unfair treatment we are receiving from IEC by not treating independent candidate equally as political parties.

Q. What is your message for the voters of your ward?
A. My message is bottom-up approach; that is what I am all about. A mandate must be found from the ground, not political parties. I am here to serve my communities’ needs as I know them well. “There is nothing for us without us.”
