Petition launched to stop trucks using Doreen Road

Residents call on authorities to properly enforce five-ton weight limit.

A petition has been launched to have added focus given to the issue of large trucks using Doreen Road.

The petition effectively calls for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) to adequately enforce existing laws as per the Road Traffic Act. The Doreen Road route between Roodekrans and Ruimsig comes with a five ton weight limit for vehicles travelling down the steep hill. Additionally, flashing warning lights and a larger warning sign were installed in July 2021, a few hundred metres before the Belladonna Road intersection.

Doreen Road is one of the few routes for motorists travelling between Roodepoort and Krugersdorp, and the more northern suburbs. To the west, the R28 is almost 10km away while Christiaan de Wet Road is over 5km east, leaving few options for truck drivers transporting goods through the city. The result is several heavy trucks having lost control coming down the hill, causing multiple accidents and losses to innocent motorists.

“This matter needs to be taken seriously and JMPD must take steps to address this unacceptable situation. This is a petition to compel the authorities to take such steps as may be necessary to stop this illegal practice by truck drivers, and to effectively enforce the existing legislation by all means possible. Please take the time to participate,” states the petition.
