Crawford teacher reaches for the peak

Nicholas von Buddenbrock took the first step of his seven-day climb up Mount Kilimanjaro this week.

Nicholas von Buddenbrock took the first step of his seven-day climb up Kilimanjaro on February 22. Von Buddennrock, who teaches science and technology at Crawford Ruimsig said the idea was inspired by his friend, who wanted to do something for his 21st birthday at the time.

“Around two years ago a friend of mine posed a question on his Instagram story, asking who’d want to climb Kilimanjaro with him. I thought, you know what, I don’t want to spend money on useless things like PlayStation games, it’s time to have an experience that I can share with people.”

He said they expected to summit around the fifth or sixth day before making the trip down the mountain. Mount Kilimanjaro peaks at 5 895 metres above sea level, meaning that it is substantially chilly up there. Von Buddenbrock share that they needed to get sleeping bags that were adequate for temperatures around -10°C.

He went on to share what he would be taking with him on the climb. “I am going to quite literally fly my school’s flag. We are going to put the flag that says Crawford International Ruimsig on top of the world.”
