Science and art on a canvas

Karen Broeke, better known as Kaz creates one a kind acrylic pour paintings.

Acrylic paint pouring is a fascinating art form. Not only is it loose and relaxed, but it is nearly impossible to create the same piece twice. Karen Broeke, better known as Kaz, creates one-of-a kind acrylic pour paintings.

Following a knee injury in 2020 and being unable to walk for a while, she needed a new outlet and stress reliever. “I came across a YouTube video of acrylic paint pouring and I told my husband that I wanted to try it. He bought me my first kit and canvases, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a different way for me to create.”

Kaz is an entrepreneur, does 3D paper crafts, shadow boxes and wood burning, “My grandmother could play the piano by ear and she could sew anything without a pattern, so I think I get my artist talent from her. I have always enjoyed making things.”

She explained that acrylic paint pouring entails mixing paint with a medium in order for it to flow. “I use a medium that is a combination of craft glue, water and floetrol which helps to get cell. Those are the bubbles that you see in some of the paintings.” From there it is simply a process of layering and probably sprinkling fairy dust because Kaz’s creations are pure magic. “You can never recreate the same thing. Even if you use the same colours, you will get something totally different,” she said.

Before she begins creating, she usually has a vague idea. She would start with a style that she wants to do or a colour scheme. She admits though that often the final product looks very different from her original idea, “… but it’s still art and every piece is different and unique. One time I did three paintings in a row of the same process and the same colours, and I ended up with three very different results and it was fascinating. I loved it,” she smiled.

Inspiration can come from the artist’s mood, YouTube videos or even Pinterest. She said she follows certain artists who keep her inspired. “I enjoy the straight pour, the ring pour, the cup pours, and the flip and drag.”

Kaz is also working on a start-up that will showcase her array of artistic creations.
