In the early hours of Thursday, August 18, City Power security officers were robbed at gunpoint in Robertville after being held hostage and tied up.
Through a media statement, the power utility expressed its concern about attacks on their security personnel, following the robbery at Robertville substation overnight.
It is alleged that three security officers were on duty at Robertville substation in Roodepoort, when they were ambushed by about 20 men in a Toyota Quantum taxi at around 02:00.
The thugs held them hostage, tied them with shoelaces, and demanded guns and their cell phones.
They then stole three 14-metre copper cables from the storeroom at the substation before driving off.
According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, the stolen property is estimated to be worth around R20 000.

Fortunately, the guards were saved by a Help24 Secure Security car that was patrolling in the area, and were not hurt.
“There have been several robberies at our substations and attacks on our technicians in recent months, and these have been reported to the police.
“We appeal to anyone with information to contact the police in Florida where the case was reported,” said Mangena.
