Florida feeding scheme still going strong

The passionate group of ladies gather every week in hopes of filling as many tummies as possible.

After starting the Florida Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church Feeding Scheme in November last year, one of the chefs and orchestrators of the project, Marlene Johnson is ecstatic to announce that the project has been growing from strength to strength.

What started with 50 to 100 meals, has now grown into between 250 and 300 meals in less than a year. Every Tuesday the congregants gather at the church around 08:00 and cook up a storm in an effort to curb the extreme hunger in the streets of Florida.

“We have an amazing registered in-house chef who helps us prepare the lovely nutritious meals on a weekly basis. However, it is only made possible by the heartfelt donations of the church congregation,” explained Johnson.

Thanks to the many helping hands, the meals are ready to be distributed around 12:00. Before departing to the various points of distribution, those involved first gather in prayer to bless the food, the hands that prepared it and the tummies who will receive it.

Tuesday, August 30 was no different when the feeding scheme team gathered at the church to make a healthy soy mince, potato and pea stew with rice. The stews, together with a loaf of bread was handed out on the day.

At first, the meals were only distributed around the church premises. According to Johnson, they now have distribution points on Die Ou Pad, Florida Station and the abandoned buildings on Goldman Street.

“Although the congregants are currently making their vehicles available for use, we would really like a vehicle to use solely for distributing the food for the feeding scheme. So, if there are any community members or corporate companies who might be interested in helping us fulfil this need, we would be infinitely grateful.”
