The tactic involves women entering a mall with a pram or other child-carrying device. The pram has pockets or a chamber lined with tinfoil and the alleged perpetrator uses the space inside the carrier to hide items, with the aluminium foil preventing detection by the store’s security alarms or sensors.

Police describe the tactic as very efficient with the majority of attempts being successful as they are only detected after the fact when reviewing surveillance.

Honeydew police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, confirmed, “A syndicate has been identified operating in shopping malls around Johannesburg whereby females are using baby strollers lined with tinfoil. Suspects have been arrested by Honeydew police and further arrests are expected in other policing areas. It is a warning to shoppers, shop owners and mall management.”
