Protect your fur baby from the elements – here’s how
SPCA urges pet owners to provide adequate shelter for their dogs.
As the seasons change, it’s essential to ensure that our beloved pets have a safe and comfortable place to call their own.
The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA manager, Mandy Cattanach, says by law, all animals must have adequate shelter for any type of weather.

She says this is according to the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, which states it is an offence to keep an animal in conditions that cause them unnecessary suffering or lack necessities like space, ventilation, light, protection, or shelter from heat, cold, or adverse weather.
“Dogs, in particular, are vulnerable to changes in the weather. Never allow them to be uncomfortable. If they’re outdoors, even during the day while you’re at work, it’s crucial to provide a place of safety and shelter from all types of weather.
“A cold dog may whimper, tuck their tail between its legs or flatten its ears against its head. Your dog may also appear restless, they may wrap himself into a tight ball and start shivering. If your pet shows signs that he isn’t coping outdoors and you can provide a warmer place inside, do so for the comfort of your pet,” she says.
Providing Adequate Shelter
To ensure your dog’s kennel meets the necessary standards:
• Make sure the kennel is waterproof, raised off the ground, and has adequate clean bedding
• Choose a kennel of adequate size for your dog’s breed
• Provide each dog with its own kennel
• Ensure the kennel entrance has an awning to prevent rain from entering
• If possible, place the kennel under a roof for extra protection
• Never use a metal kennel, as it can be a fridge in winter and an oven in summer

Additional Tips
• Raise the kennel off the ground using bricks or a wooden pallet to keep it dry
• Glue a piece of carpet to the kennel floor for easy cleaning
• Secure your dog’s blanket to the kennel using rope and small holes to prevent it from being pulled out
• Ensure your dog’s bedding is always dry and clean
• Provide a warmer, thicker blanket in winter
