Unveiling the secrets of venom

Renowned expert Jonathan Leeming shares his expertise on the latest advances in venom treatment and prevention.

Jonathan Leeming, a renowned expert on spider bites and scorpion stings, hosted a seminar at Kloofendal Nature Reserve on Saturday, March 8, aimed at speaking to residents about the world of venom and providing attendees with a more profound understanding of the latest advances in treatment and prevention.

As the leading authority on spider bites and scorpion stings in southern Africa, Jonathan is no stranger to the complexities of venom. His work has shaped the way spider bites and scorpion stings are treated across the region, and he consults for medical organisations such as the National Poison Information Helpline.

The Venom Day workshop focused on three critical areas: the current antivenom crisis, new advances in reducing the burden of snakebites, and the need for a science-based approach to reducing bites and stings. Jonathan delved into the alarming shortage of antivenom in Southern Africa, highlighting the dangers of ineffective and untested products being used in desperation.

In a fascinating presentation, Jonathan shared insights from the Eswatini Snakebite Symposium, where experts discussed innovative approaches to addressing snakebite. The Eswatini model, which combines training for medical professionals, community-based efforts, and ensuring antivenom availability, has yielded remarkable results – zero snakebite deaths so far this season.

The session concluded with a focus on first aid for snake bites, spider bites, scorpion stings, and centipede bites. Jonathan emphasised the importance of a science-based approach to reducing bites and stings, and participants left with a newfound appreciation for the complexities of venom.

As a parting gift, Jonathan shared a list of links to the latest research papers and guidelines on snake bites, scorpion stings, and spider bites. Attendees also received an invitation to Jonathan’s free Scorpion Sting First Response Online Course.

On September 13, he will be conducting his presentation for Venom Day at Kloofendal Nature Reserve. Be sure to mark your calendars and don’t miss the opportunity.
