Illegal dumping plagues Magnum Road

As the issue continues to plague the community, residents remain hopeful that increased vigilance and collaboration between the authorities and local residents will lead to a cleaner, safer environment.

Illegal dumping on Magnum Road is causing serious concern among residents, who are now calling for immediate action to address the growing issue. Yvonne Ackerman, a local resident and Wilgeheuwel Honeydew Residents Association secretary, shared her frustration with the ongoing problem, highlighting the dangers and inconvenience caused by persistent illegal dumping in the area.

“Illegal dumping is reported, but still, the illegal dumpers come back,” Ackerman said. “My husband was almost run over by an illegal dumper he tried to stop.”

The frequent dumping has not only marred the environment but also created a safety hazard for the community. Ackerman, like many of her neighbours, is desperate for effective measures to tackle the issue.

“We need assistance to make the road better – signs indicating where they can dump, proper maintenance, and real action from the authorities.”

The JMPD has acknowledged the issue, with spokesperson Xolani Fihla commenting, “Please be advised that the JMPD By-Laws Management Unit has been contacted to investigate the matter of illegal dumping on Magnum Road. They will be taking appropriate action to address these concerns.”

Regarding illegal dumping, Fihla assured the public that the JMPD By-Law Management Unit, a dedicated team specifically designed to combat illegal dumping, is actively monitoring and responding to reports.

He added that when illegal dumpers are caught, they are issued fines. To support the fight against illegal dumping, residents are encouraged to report incidents via the Anti-Illegal Dumping WhatsApp Hotline at 082 779 1361 and clear photos of the dumping site, along with the vehicle’s number plate, date, time, and location, should be sent in.
