Roodepoort City Power has issued a stern warning to its customers to refrain from making payments to technicians or contractors for repairs or work related to its network.
According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, “City Power technicians and contractors are strictly prohibited from demanding payment for any work performed on our network. We urge customers to report any attempts to solicit payment immediately to our security on 0800 002 587 or our call centre toll-free on 0800 202 925.”
Mangena strongly criticised the growing problem of dishonest contractors forcing customers to pay them.
“We will be investigating these incidents, and those found to be implicated will face the consequences,” he warned.
City Power also cautioned customers who are facing disconnection due to outstanding electricity bills not to pay anyone who promises to reconnect their power supply.
“This will not only result in penalty fees but could also lead to criminal prosecution,” Mangena explained.
Instead, customers with outstanding bills are advised to visit City Power’s Service Delivery Centre to make payment or sign an acknowledgement of debt and commit to a payment plan. Upon making a payment, customers will receive a receipt, which serves as proof of payment and is necessary for any future inquiries or issues.
Mangena emphasised that City Power has had several incidents where customers paid technicians thousands of rands for unauthorised reconnections, only to have their power supply disconnected again, leaving them with a bigger financial burden.
